West: Dems about dependency society | News Service Florida ...

In case you missed coverage over the weekend of Romney in Florida, he was introduced by Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West, who is in a battle for a South Florida congressional seat against challenger Patrick Murphy.

Possibly the most interesting thing about West?s ?four minute turn on stage was that he took up the notion that Democrats want people to be dependent on government ? a slightly altered version of the Romney 47 percent remarks, which the presidential candidate now says was wrong. But some ?Republicans do believe that Democrats foster a sense of dependency on government ? West, being one of them. (To be fair, while they?d disagree with the word dependency, ?because of its negative connotations, many Democrats will say they do believe people should be able to ?depend? on a government safety net.)

Here?s what West said: ?It?s a race between what is simply called ?the opportunity society? versus ?the dependency society.??

Obviously that?s a short-hand generalization, and Democrats, of course, would argue they?re about opportunity too, particularly for the middle class and poor, while Republicans, they would say are more about opportunity for the wealthy.
