Intel Chief Executive to Retire in May - NYTimes.com

8:21 p.m. |Update

SAN FRANCISCO ? After almost 40 years at Intel, its chief executive, Paul S. Otellini, is retiring, just as the company struggles with a momentous challenge: computing?s big shift to mobile devices.

Mr. Otellini, 62, surprised the technology world Monday by announcing that he would retire as an officer and director of the chip company this May, three years before he hits Intel?s mandatory retirement age. The board said it would immediately begin a search for a successor.

During a tenure that began in May 2005, Mr. Otellini established a strong track record. He increased Intel?s revenue 57 percent, to $55 billion at the end of 2011, and slightly widened its gross profit margin. Along the way, Mr. Otellini had to settle an antitrust suit for $1.25 billion, persuaded Apple to put Intel chips in its computers and cut 20,000 workers. Intel, the world?s largest semiconductor maker, now employs 100,000 people.

But the company?s share price has fallen about 20 percent in Mr. Otellini?s time. That is because the world of personal computers and computer servers, which Intel dominated partly through a close relationship with Microsoft, now competes with a global explosion of smartphones and tablets, which connect to large data centers. While Intel has some presence in these areas, it faces many new competitors and challenges, both to its business and to its way of thinking about products.

The right successor to Mr. Otellini, said Andrew Bryant, Intel?s chairman, would preserve Intel?s engineering-driven culture but turn it into an organization that is better able to anticipate rapidly changing consumer tastes.

?We don?t see the PC category going away, but we see that the market has changed,? Mr. Bryant said. ?We need to figure out what the market wants.?

Mr. Otellini could not be reached for comment. In a statement issued by Intel, he said that ?after almost four decades with the company and eight years as C.E.O., it?s time to move on and transfer Intel?s helm to a new generation of leadership.?

Last month Intel reported that its third-quarter net income fell 14.3 percent from a year earlier, to $3 billion, largely because of poor demand for PCs. The research firm IDC said that worldwide PC shipments fell 8.6 percent to 87.8 million units in the third quarter. Adding to the woes, Microsoft?s Windows 8 operating system, which Intel hoped would lift sales, was released in October to tepid reviews.

While they are both hurting from the PC plunge, Intel and Microsoft may be the best off of a troubled bunch. Last week, Advanced Micro Devices, Intel?s top competitor in chips for PCs, was forced to deny rumors that it was looking for a buyer. Its stock is down about 65 percent this year. Hewlett-Packard and Dell, both big PC makers, are also struggling.

Mr. Bryant said that Mr. Otellini had informed the board of his decision last Wednesday, citing a need for new leadership. He credited Mr. Otellini with putting Intel on track to produce chips that require less power. That is important both for battery-dependent smartphones and for data centers running hundreds of thousands of servers.

He also noted Mr. Otellini?s efforts in spearheading a category of lightweight laptop computers called ultrabooks, which have yet to take off in the market. Mr. Otellini also championed a wireless technology called WiMAX that never lived up to its billing.

Intel influences PC manufacturers in a number of ways. Besides designing and making the very core of their products, Intel also invests heavily in related fields; for example, through its venture arm it created a $300 million fund to promote ultrabooks. And it teaches its customers what they can do with each new generation of Intel chips, which in turn leads to new software development.

While Intel will look at both internal and external candidates, Mr. Bryant said, an internal candidate would probably prove a better fit, as that person would understand the culture. In its 45-year history, all of Intel?s five chief executives have been insiders.

Mr. Otellini?s departure is the third exit of a prominent executive from a major tech company in the last few weeks. In late October, Scott Forstall, who was the head of Apple?s mobile software development, was fired by Timothy D. Cook, the chief executive. Steven Sinofsky, the head of Windows at Microsoft, left the company a week ago, just after the introduction of Windows 8 and the Surface tablet. His brash personality led to internal clashes, and he and Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft?s chief executive, agreed that it was time for him to go, according to a person briefed on the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly about it.

While both of those men were regarded as abrasive by those who worked with them, Mr. Otellini was not. A generally well-liked San Francisco native with an M.B.A. from Berkeley, Mr. Otellini was considered a break from Intel?s norm when he became chief because he was not formally trained in engineering.

But Ken Dulaney, an analyst with Gartner, drew a connection between the departures of the Microsoft and Intel executives.

?While Sinofsky and Otellini are gone for different reasons, underneath it similar forces are at work,? said. ?Microsoft and Intel haven?t done a good job making PCs more compelling, and people are spending their dollars for electronics differently.?

49ers defense begs to differ with President

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- President Barack Obama has already given his hometown Chicago Bears the nod for best defense in the NFL.

San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis insists he is hardly one to argue with the commander in chief, especially considering Obama will be running the country from the oval office for another four years.

"I saw that," Willis said, laughing. "Chicago's defense, they're playing very well right now. They have some tremendous talent on that side of the ball, but they're playing great team defense right now. Kudos to them. But at the same time, too, we have our own defense to worry about that we're trying to continue to make better. That's our focus."

San Francisco defensive tackle Ray McDonald will let the president have his say, too.

"He's the man," McDonald said. "You can't argue with him. His opinion matters."

Chicago's dominant defense is certainly playing the very smothering, run-stopping style of football the 49ers did last season -- and the form San Francisco hopes to get back to in the season's second half as it tries to lock up a first-round playoff bye.

On Nov. 5 during Monday Night Football, a night before he was re-elected, Obama said the ball-hawking Bears have the "best defense in the league right now" led by coordinator Rod Marinelli -- who calls his unit's chemistry "special."

The Bears (7-2) boast the talented linebacker tandem of Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs. On the 49ers side, it's the duo of Willis

and NaVorro Bowman.

Not that Briggs is paying too much attention to who has the best linebackers -- or defense, for that matter. He knows everyone will get a glimpse come Monday at Candlestick Park.

By ranking this week, the 49ers stand third in the league with the Bears two spots back at No. 5 in overall defense. Chicago is fourth at stopping the run, San Francisco sits at seventh. Defending the pass, the Niners are fifth and the Bears 10th.

"How do I feel about it? Doesn't change the way I play, doesn't change the way we play over here," Briggs said. "That's the ranking. And the thing about a ranking is, the ranking doesn't mean anything if you don't get to that Super Bowl. That's the goal, going to the Super Bowl."

The Bears have an NFL-best 19 interceptions. No arguing these teams are awfully close. San Francisco (6-2-1) allows an NFL-low 14.1 points per game, followed by Chicago at 14.8. The Bears have 26 sacks -- tied for sixth -- to San Francisco's 17.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke kept his entire starting 11 intact from last season's defense, though linebacker Parys Haralson was lost for the season with a torn triceps muscle.

"As far as the president goes, he's our president so you can't say much about who he says is the best," Willis said. "It's his hometown, so he has every right to say them, but I guess we'll see when it's all said and done."

Both teams are eager to bounce back -- the 49ers from a disappointing 24-24 tie, the NFL's first in four years, at home against the division rival Rams last week, and the Bears a 13-6 loss at Houston.

On the offensive side, both teams were busy this week preparing their backups for the key NFC matchup on the big stage after starters Jay Cutler of Chicago and San Francisco's Alex Smith each was lost to a concussion last Sunday.

It very well could come down to Bears No. 2 Jason Campbell vs. second-year pro Colin Kaepernick under center.

There are division implications at stake, and the result could affect playoff positioning, too. San Francisco holds a narrow lead as it tries to defend its NFC West title, while the Bears are trying to create space atop the NFC North with the Green Bay Packers close behind.

"As always, I think it's a big game," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "It's a huge game. I think everybody will be crowded in to watch it to see how we respond, see how the Bears respond. Football world will be watching this one and it's a big game because it's the next game. But, it's a big game. I feel that our team will respond well."

No matter the quarterback, the game goes on.

"We have to go with our game plan" Chicago coach Lovie Smith said. "They're not going to change much based on who their quarterback is."

The 49ers have plenty to clean up after they were 2 for 11 in third-down conversions against the Rams, allowed 458 yards and were penalized seven times for 66 yards -- several of those coming at costly moments.

The last thing they want to do is make those same mistakes against Chicago's opportunistic defense.

Earlier this season, the Bears had a three-week span with five interceptions returned for touchdowns. Charles Tillman and Briggs each had a pick and ran it back to score during a 34-18 Monday night win at Dallas.

"Takeaways and scoring -- that's basically what this defense has been about," safety Major Wright said.

And that's about right. Sounds an awful lot like how things went for the 49ers a year ago.

Willis will let others, like President Obama, decide who is superior.

"We let the critics and sports writers say what they must," Willis said. "For us, we just go out there and play. Our ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl, whatever it takes that's what we want to do. First we've got to win the regular-season games and see what happens from there."

Environment Ministry Hosts UNEP Journalists' Workshop - Bahamas ...

The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) opened a three-day regional journalists? workshop Oct. 15 to train media professionals on the benefits of pursuing Inclusive Green Economy that educates the public about the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The seminar was held at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel.

Mrs. Lorraine Armbrister, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment and Housing, welcomed the Caribbean Journalists on behalf of Minister Kendred Dorsett, who had a previous commitment off the island

?We in The Bahamas noted with great interest the fact that only a few weeks ago on September 16, 2012, the Montreal Protocol celebrated its Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years since its inception,? said Mrs. Armbrister. ?We are indeed pleased that you have chosen The Bahamas for this very important meeting. ? You will all be aware that the Montreal Protocol seeks to preserve the ozone layer, by phasing out all ozone depleting substances. ? During the last 25 years, there have been a number of successes both nationally and globally.?

Mrs. Armbrister said? UNEP celebrates its universal membership, phase-out of 98 percent of ozone depleting substances, achieving close to 135 gig atones in CO2 emissions savings, the Global phase-out of chloro-fluoro-carbon (CFCs) by 2010 and the benefits for human health and the environment.

?To date, the Montreal Protocol is the most successful multi-environmental agreement in the history of the United Nations. ? The Global Community has seen a dramatic reduction in the cases of skin cancer and cataracts and dollars spent on health care due to the controls enforced under the protocol. ? There have also been significant climate benefits. ? Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are also global warming gases, therefore the decrease in the production and use of ozone depleting substances resulted in a reduction of 25 billion tons of carbon dioxide between 1990 and 2000,? said Mrs. Armbrister.

She said that despite many successes, governments still face major challenges such as the phasing out of the use and production of hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by developing Article Five countries, and providing training for industry technicians and regulators.

?I am pleased to report today that The Bahamas has worked assiduously to adhere to its international obligations. ? The most notable achievement of The Bahamas in the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, is the passage of the Montreal Protocol Act in February 2006. ? The Government further deepened its support for the protocol, with the addition of specific regulations to support this act in October of 2008. ? The Montreal Protocol Act has now become the primary mechanism for the monitoring, control, and eventual phase-out of all ozone depleting substances in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.?

Mrs Armbrister spoke about the legislative foundation for the national ozone unit to collaborate with the Bahamas Customs Department and train more than 250 customs officers in the key areas needed for the detection of the destructive gases at the nation?s borders. Both departments will continue this collaborative effort, by training all new customs officers for the foreseeable future.

?The donation of 16 refrigerant identifiers from the United Nations Environment Programme allowed over 300 customs officers to be trained in the use of these machines at all ports of entry in The Bahamas,? said the Permanent Secretary.

And she emphasised that considerable effort has been made by the government to ensure that the highest level of technical training is made available for local technicians through the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), and the refrigeration service engineers society that over 1,800 technicians have been trained in good practices and in the handling of ozone depleting substances.

?Public awareness has also played a vital role in the success of the Montreal Protocol in The Bahamas. ? Many initiatives aimed at educating our young people about the importance of preserving our ozone layer have been undertaken. A number of presentations have been held at various primary and secondary schools, using a multiplicity of methodologies such as stories, prizes, quizzes, and even puppet skits. The Government of The Bahamas is keenly aware of the fact that targeting the next generation will ensure that the success of the Montreal Protocol remains sustainable in The Bahamas.?

Public awareness is also one of the major challenges being addressed through the workshop. UNEP seeks to sensitise media professionals by strengthening their skills on environmental journalism, providing relevant information, tools, and inputs for transmitting messages about environment protection and governance in the Caribbean.

?I am certain that the information provided will be useful and timely, and that each of you having being empowered, will promote the message of environmental protection. It is my distinct pleasure on behalf of the Honourable Minister of the Environment & Housing to declare this workshop officially opened,? said Mrs. Armbrister.

Present at the session was Mr. Alejandro Laguna, Information Officer for the UNEP Ozone Action Programme, Ms. Melony McKenzie, Director of the Department of Environmental Health Services, which is responsible for the National Ozone Unit. Also present was Mr. Dwayne Curtis, Assistant Director of the Environmental Monitoring and Risk Assessment Division, Mr. Roscoe Perpall, Ozone Officer, Ms. Carol Albury from the Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems Department, Mr. Eric Carey from the Bahamas National Trust, Mrs. Eleanor Phillips of the Nature Conservancy, Mrs. Coral Miller of the Ministry of the Environment, Mr. Elcott Coleby, Deputy Director? of Bahamas Information Services.

Team Foundation Service Update ? Nov 19th - Brian Harry's blog ...

Sprint 39 is now done and deployed.? As always, you can see the latest on the service on the service release notes: http://tfs.visualstudio.com/en-us/home/news/

Sprint 39 was another modest release.? We went through a pretty big reorganization after VS 2012 shipped and it has taken a couple of months to get all of the new teams formed, get there plans settled and get moving quickly.? RTMing the service a few weeks ago also took a fair amount of behind the scenes work.? So other than a few big things we?re not quite ready to announce yet, other visible improvements have been fewer than I?d like.

The biggest improvement in this deployment was the reincarnation of the ability to email work item info from within the web UI.? That?s a feature we had in 2010 but lost in 2012.? The reason we lost it was that we did pretty much a re-write of the web UI with more modern web practices and we just weren?t quite able to get all of the features back.? At this point, I think we have all but a few.? You can read the release notes for more.

image

Another minor change we made was to the account landing page.? Much to my chagrin, far too many people create an account and then never go on to create a project.? We have a theory that the problem is that it is way too hard to discover how to or even that you need to create a team project.? We?ve re-done this page (where you land after creating an account) to hopefully make it much more obvious that you need to create a Team Project.? We got further plans to make this page much better but this was a short term modest improvement.

image

Our single biggest support request over the past couple of months has been from people wanting to rename their accounts.? We can do that but it has been something our operations team had to do.? Of course that?s a bad solution.? So in Sprint 39, we built the support necessary to enable the ?front line? customer support team to do it themselves.? In Sprint 40, we?ll be building a UI over that to enable customers to do it without ever contacting support.

Things are likely to stay a little low key through the holidays but I expect we?re going to come out swinging in January with some major new capabilities that I think you?ll be excited about.? Stay tuned.

Brian
