Yahoo buys more mobile expertise in latest deal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo has bought another Silicon Valley mobile startup as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to create more compelling products for smartphones and tablet computers.

Tuesday's acquisition of OnTheAir follows Yahoo's recent purchase of a mobile startup called Stamped. In both cases, Yahoo was drawn more by the engineering talent working at the startups than the services that they have been offering.

Yahoo Inc., which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., didn't disclose how much it paid for OnTheAir, which is based in San Francisco.

The service enables users to hold online video chats in a talk-show format. Yahoo didn't say whether it intends to continue OnTheAir's service.

Yahoo is in the process of closing Stamped's service just six weeks after announcing that acquisition so the engineers picked up in that deal can focus on other projects. Five of the 11 Stamped employees used to work for Google Inc., where Mayer was a top executive before Yahoo lured her away to become its CEO in mid-July.

One of OnTheAir's employees, Daniel Hopkins, also used to work at Google. The resumes of the four other OnTheAir workers being scooped up by Yahoo list stints at Apple Inc. and instant messaging service Meebo.

"Hiring the most talented mobile product thinkers and engineers is a big priority for us moving forward," Adam Cahan, Yahoo's senior vice president of emerging products and technology, said in a statement.

Mayer has said she believes half of Yahoo's engineering talent must eventually consist of mobile computing specialists.

Yahoo's stock gained 38 cents, or 2 percent, to close Tuesday at $18.93.

There?s one question reviewers and critics have been asking since a Woodsbury shooter dispatched Oscar in last night?s midseason finale of The Walking Dead: Seriously?

Still, we?ve already become accustomed to these problems, and, despite them, last night?s episode dropped the dominoes quite effectively and demonstrated again how this show has so summarily closed the gap between its production value and its story value. As Alan Sepinwall of Hitfix writes, ?The zombies are almost besides the point now.?

?By using the zombies not as primary antagonists, but as the inciting incident forcing all these people to make hard?at times monstrous?choices, The Walking Dead has become a much more morally complicated show, in addition to remaining one that's great at action and suspense,? Sepinwall writes. No one can doubt that after the nail-biting fight between Michonne and the Governor, which handedly outdoes any other tussle in the show?s history.

Like any good finale, the episode?s emotional moments matched its deftly executed suspense, showing viewers that even though the show spends less and less time unwinding Rick and Carl?s psyches , Lori?s death is still raw for them both. For Rick, an unexpected hallucination of Shane shows that his vision quest in the prison did not expunge his guilt, and Oscar?s death reminds us that his psychosis doesn?t sit in a display case for us to examine but as a serious liability to his group. For Carl, Lori?s death has transformed him into a stoic native of this apocalyptical world. ?He?s a proper child soldier now, and while I applaud how bad-ass he?s become, it?s still a bit unnerving,? writes Eric Kain of Forbes. Unnerving indeed. Whereas Rick childishly goes off the deep end in his self-loathing and grief, Carl, the actual child, appears detached, almost uncaring. A coolness, even remorselessness, tinges everything he does with Tyreese?s group: demanding that Tyresse?s group finish off their bitten companion, locking Tyreese?s people in an adjacent cell, standing composedly as one of Tyresse?s survivors excoriates him through the bars. His business-like handling of these wretched people seems unfitting for a boy who should be reading Harry Potter or listening to Justin Bieber or doing whatever tweens do these days. But your average tween hasn?t watched his mother?s agonizing death and his father?s subsequent derailment.

Carl has adapted so well, in fact, that it?s disturbing, maybe more so than zombie heads in fish tanks. You can cut up this show in a lot of ways. Maybe it?s about the Holocaust. Considering the Governor?s comments last night, maybe it?s about terrorism. Maybe it?s about how the pressure to survive determines how individuals and groups interact and conflict. It?s probably about all of these things and more, but the most resonant aspect of this show to me is trauma and how people respond to it. Do they adapt, like Shane and Carl? Do they blame themselves, like Rick? Or do they blame God and clutch desperately to what once was, reach for unscrupulous power, and try hopelessly to raise the dead ? like the Governor? Each response allows an individual to endure, unlike Jacqui, but each has its own price. For Carl, it?s innocence. For Rick, it?s his leadership. For the Governor, it?s sanity.

This has been a great season by any measure. The show is not only more entertaining, it feels more realistic than it used to, if that means anything for a show about zombies; Rick?s group spends less time housekeeping and more time struggling for survival. Major characters die unexpectedly. Above all, the writers seem more adept at staging conflict. The zombies are less dangerous, but the apocalypse itself is more dangerous as the dust settles and the surviving tribes of humanity struggle to survive and rebuild. In a few episodes, the show turned itself from a nauseating stew of inconsistencies and banalities into everything I?d hope a zombie show should be. The Walking Dead is now brutal and bizarre and actually good TV, and it?ll be a long wait to see how the rest of the season will unfold starting in February.

This college football bowl season is like a brand of Chex Mix that comes with a bunch of nuts you don't really care to eat.

Sure, there's a handful of enticing matchups that are worthy of your time for three or so hours. But by the time you're done picking through to the good ones, you realize there's not much left.

Well, there are other things to do this holiday season.

Like, go ice skating.

Or, check out all the pretty lights.

Whatever it is, there's never been a better reason to spend some time ? some real quality time ? with your friends and family.

Believe us, you won't be missing a thing if you tune out what will soon be running virtually nonstop on your plasma screen, in all its high-def ugliness. This is nothing more than a bunch of meaningless contests between mediocre teams, a lineup that that makes "Honey Boo Boo" look like "Downton Abbey."

Call it Must-Miss TV.

The guys who run the system clearly take us as nothing but a bunch of suckers, willing to watch whatever drivel they put before us as long they attach the word "bowl" to some product they're pushing.

When the complete list of bowls was finally unveiled in all its glory Sunday night, most of the attention turned to Northern Illinois, a team that somehow made the Orange Bowl after losing to Iowa (which won 33 percent of its games) and barely beating Army and Kansas (who combined for a grand total of three victories).

But let's not take out our wrath on the ... uh, hmmm ... whatever their nickname is. We should actually be saluting the MAC champs, because they're like a single minnow swimming ahead bravely to take on the BCS sharks, all while making an already ludicrous system look even sillier.

Besides, there's plenty of bowl games that are far more objectionable than the one in Miami between the Seminoles of Florida State and the ... uh, hmm ... oh yeah, the Huskies, that's it, of Northern Illinois.

The good folks of El Paso will be subjected to a Sun Bowl featuring a team with a losing record (Georgia Tech) and perhaps the most underachieving squad in all the land (USC).

The Yellow Jackets (6-7) needed a waiver from the NCAA before they could accept their invitation. The Trojans lost five times after starting the season at No. 1.

"We're excited about a very good bowl and a great matchup," said USC coach Lane Kiffin, who we can only assume awoke the next morning to find his nose had grown by a foot or two.

But, who knows, maybe one of Kiffin's minions will go all rogue again and deflate the tires on the team buses. That way, they can't leave their hotels and no one would have to be subjected to such a marquee matchup.

Though, we must say, this game might have some car-crash appeal if held in conjunction with a Kiffin family reunion. The bratty coach already dumped his 72-year-old dad because of the team's defensive woes, and he surely would be willing to jettison a few more relatives if the Trojans lost again.

Georgia Tech, meanwhile, was blown out at home by Middle Tennessee, lost its final regular-season game by 32 points and wound up with a losing record after getting into the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game by default, the next team in line after Miami decided to spend another postseason in self-imposed lockdown.

Even after losing the ACC game, the Yellow Jackets still got the call that extended their bowl streak to 16 years in a row.

Talk about an achievement worthy of an asterisk.

But, this isn't about one particular school. There's plenty of averageness to go around.

A dozen teams received bowl bids with records of 6-6, which is often the sort of mark that gets a coach fired, not earns his team a trip at the holidays. (Or, in the case of Purdue, was bowl-worthy AND got the coach fired).

In fact, there are two games matching a pair of 6-6 teams ? Rice vs Air Force in the Armed Services Bowl at Fort Worth (sorry, our men and women in uniform) and Pittsburgh vs. Ole Miss in the BBVA Compass Bowl at Birmingham.

When those kind of teams get together, they're hoping you throw out the record book.

Instead, you should change the channel.

Yet, none of the 35 bowls could find a spot for Louisiana Tech, the highest-scoring team in the country, a squad that won nine times and barely lost to Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in one of the most entertaining games of the season.

The Bulldogs apparently weren't too thrilled about the idea of going to the nearby Independence Bowl to dance with another team from their own state (Louisiana-Monroe). They thought they had might get a call from someone more handsome. The Independence was all, like, why you disrespectin' us, girlfriend? So they called up Ohio (University, not State), which said "yes."

"Under no circumstances did I ever think there was any possibility at all that we would not play in a bowl game," Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes said. "It is a shame that our nationally recognized team and its 31 seniors have to end the season this way."

No, the real shame is that college football ends its season this way.

We're promised a playoff in 2014, but we should see through that four-team ruse. It's a way to silence everyone who wants a legitimate playoff (16 teams, minimum) and keep alive the bowl system, nothing more than a nonprofit scam lining the pockets of its operators with exorbitant salaries for the taxing job of putting on one game a year.

Maybe if the fans stop watching, there will be a true playoff.

Maybe if the fans stop buying tickets, all these meaningless games will wither up and die.

There's no better time to start than now.

Employment Court Backs Workers On KiwiSaver | Stuff.co.nz

A landmark ruling by the Employment Court could effectively raise the minimum wage for workers enrolled in KiwiSaver.

The case could mean an extra $450 a year for those on the minimum wage, but BusinessNZ says it could lead to higher unemployment.

Lower Hutt caregivers Vasivasi Faitala and Dalrene Goff took employer Terranova Homes & Care to court, arguing it was unfair that they had to pay both their own and Terranova's KiwiSaver contributions under their employment agreement.

The women both earn the minimum wage of $13.50 an hour, made up of $13.24 plus 26 cents for Terranova's KiwiSaver contribution.

The normal approach to employer KiwiSaver contributions is to pay them on top of an employee's salary, but some employers favour a "total remuneration" approach that includes their contribution, on the grounds that it treats all staff equally.

Faitala and Goff argued it was a breach of the Minimum Wage Act, which guarantees every worker at least $13.50 per hour.

Chief Employment Court Judge Graeme Colgan agreed, and ordered Terranova to pay any compulsory contributions in addition to the workers' gross salaries.

He said in his ruling that, if all employers adopted the rest home's approach, it would undermine the key purpose of KiwiSaver for those on the minimum wage by discouraging them from joining the scheme.

Terranova executive director Terry Bell said no decision had been made on whether to appeal.

Employment lawyer Susan Hornsby-Geluk said she believed the case was the first of its kind. It drew a clear distinction between salary and KiwiSaver contributions and could set a precedent.

BusinessNZ chief executive Phil O'Reilly said he disagreed with the court decision. "It will surprise many employers, and not in a nice way" and would also mean a rise in unemployment as businesses took on fewer staff.

Retailers' price war can save you big bucks

This holiday season, the hottest trend among retailers isn't found on a store shelf. It's taking place at the cash register.

Major retailers, from Best Buy to Toys R Us, are promising to match their competitors' prices. Generally customers just need to bring in an advertisement or printout to prove that the same item is available elsewhere at a lower price. In some cases, shoppers can come back with a receipt and get a refund for the difference if the price of an item they bought fell.

Best Buy, Target, Walmart and Sears offer price matching to customers all year round. But what's different now is that Best Buy and Target are matching online retailers such as Amazon.com for the first time. That's a big deal, since online prices tend to be lower than those at stores.

Shoppers will be able to save some extra money, but they're going to have to read a lot of fine print to do so.

"Price matching sounds good, but there are so many exclusions, it sometimes isn't as good as it sounds," says Edgar Dworsky, the founder of ConsumerWorld.org, which tracks deals for shoppers.

For instance, Target limits the number of online retailers that it will price match against to just five. Best Buy has selected 20, but only matched online prices from Nov. 1 to Nov. 17 and will start again from Nov. 27 to Dec. 24.

Toys R Us is offering price matching for the first time and will only match prices that customers find in other brick-and-mortar stores. Walmart also matches against in-store prices. However, both retailers will match prices found on their own websites if the prices are lower than what you find in their stores. It's not uncommon for retailers to offer steeper discounts online than in their actual stores. (But Toys R Us says it won't match prices on its own website if the item is marked as an "online-only price.")

Even the most experienced bargain hunters can get tripped up by all the rules. But shoppers can save some money if they're diligent.

"It really is a way to save money and shop at the store you want instead of one that's inconvenient," says Dworsky.

Here are five ways to get the most out of price matching offers:

1. Know the policy
If you want to take advantage of a price match offer, read the store's policy closely. You can find the guidelines on the store's website.

Print out the policy and bring it with you. Having a hard copy will be helpful if you need to argue your case.

"Know their policy backwards or you may be bluffed into thinking something doesn't qualify," says Dworsky.

2. Bring proof
Always bring the advertisement or the printed web page for the item you want to price match. Walmart doesn't require bringing the ad because it says cashiers have access to all local advertisements. But Dworsky recommends bringing ads in anyway. If there's any confusion, you'll be better prepared to make your case no matter where you shop.

The cashiers and customer representatives are always looking for a reason not to approve the transaction, says Dworsky.

3. Save receipts
Some retailers will give you money back if you see a lower price after you buy an item. Keep a hold of your receipts and, particularly for big-ticket items, continue to look for lower prices.

Best Buy will issue refunds until the end of January. Toys R Us lets you seek a refund up to seven days after buying an item. Sears customers can get a refund after 14 days. Target is letting customer's price match against brick-and-mortar retailers until Dec. 24 for any item bought after Nov. 1. You can only ask Target to match the price of an online retailer until Dec. 16.

4. Go straight to the customer service desk
Many retailers have hired cashiers specifically for the holiday rush, so the new employees may not be up-to-speed on the store's price-matching policy. Heather Wheeler, who runs savings website TheKrazyCouponLady.com, recommends handling the transaction at the customer service desk instead on the cashier.

"(Those staffers are) trained a little more and are more knowledgeable," says Wheeler.

5. Look beyond retailers
You can also price match depending on how you pay. PayPal, the payment processer, promises to match a lower price if you've already made a purchase using the service. That includes airline tickets. PayPal will match the prices of retailers that don't let customers use PayPal, however. Just fill out a form and upload a receipt when you find a lower price. PayPal will give you back up to $1,000 for all purchases made until Dec. 31.

You should also ask your credit card company to see if it offers price matching. It's rare, but there are a few cards that do.

Citi just launched a program for its credit card holders. Called the Citi Price Rewind program, it promises to do the work for you. Register your purchases made on the Citi credit card online and it will send you a check for the difference if it finds a lower price from an online retailer.

The program is aimed at pricier purchases: It will only issue a discount if the price difference is $25 or more. Citi will give you the amount up to $250 for each item, and up to $1,000 a year. Of course, you're going to need pay your credit card bill in full and not incur interest charges to truly make this a deal.
